Walnut Hills was annexed in 1869 and is one of Cincinnati's oldest hilltop neighborhoods. In its Gilbert-Sinton Historic District none of the standing buildings predates 1880 and little was added after 1900, leaving large Queen Anne and Shingle-style houses and rowhouses such as Gilbert Row, typically on stone or brick foundations. Walnut Hills holds the high ground on Cincinnati's near east side beside Eden Park, and its growth followed transit: the city's first cable car line ran up Gilbert Avenue, and by the late 1800s six streetcar lines met at Peebles' Corner, the commercial crossroads at Gilbert Avenue and McMillan Street.
