I'm Sam Reynolds, and Greater Cincinnati radon is my subject: why the ground under this city produces so much of it, and what actually has to happen inside a house to get the number down. Cincinnati sits on Ordovician limestone and shale along the Cincinnati Arch, rock carrying enough trace uranium-238 that radon is a routine condition here rather than an unlucky one, which is how Hamilton, Butler, Warren, and Clermont counties in Ohio and Campbell, Kenton, and Boone counties in Northern Kentucky all ended up in EPA Radon Zone 1.
I work from the consensus standards, and I know them cold. ANSI/AARST CCAH-2020-0523 covers how an active sub-slab depressurization system is designed and installed in an existing home, including suction-point placement, fan sizing, sealing, and where the stack is allowed to terminate. ANSI/AARST MAH-2023 covers measurement, including the closed-house conditions and chain-of-custody documentation a real-estate test has to carry before a lender will accept it. Alongside those I track the EPA Citizen's Guide to Radon (the 4.0 pCi/L action level and the 2.0 to 4.0 pCi/L consider-mitigation range) and the Ohio Department of Health Indoor Radon Program rules that license mitigators under Ohio Revised Code 3723.02.
The local patterns are where the useful answers live. Ohio Department of Health data puts roughly 1 in 3 Hamilton County homes that test above the action level, and the risk is not spread evenly. Pre-1950 stone-basement housing in Hyde Park, Mariemont, Norwood, and East Walnut Hills has many more soil-gas entry paths than the post-2010 slab construction in Mason, West Chester, and Liberty Township, where Ohio's radon-resistant new-construction provisions left a passive stack stubbed through the slab in a lot of homes. Season matters too: readings taken during the October to March heating season, when houses are closed up and stack effect is strongest, generally run higher than a summer test on the same house.
