Radon mitigation in Lockland, OH

Lockland had about 5,700 residents in both 1930 and 1950, and about 3,500 today. A village that stopped growing that long ago holds housing that largely predates World War II, often on stone or brick foundations, and where houses stand close together an exterior riser has little room, so an interior route to the attic is often the cleaner install. Underneath, the Mill Creek valley is filled with glacial sand, gravel, and clay: a gas boring in Lockland reported by the U.S. Geological Survey did not reach bedrock until 190 feet down, and fill that layered can carry soil gas unevenly from one lot to the next.

Lockland takes its name from the first set of lock gates on the Miami and Erie Canal north of Cincinnati, where a 15-foot change in water level powered the village's early gristmills; the canal closed in 1929, and I-75 now follows its old route through the 1.2-square-mile village on the floor of the Mill Creek valley.
